Tortilla sandwiches
Tortilla sandwiches or tortilla roll ups are very versatile and so easy to make. Using flour tortillas and your favorite fillings, you can create endless combinations for either breakfast, lunch or as an anytime snack, and they work really well when organising a brunch buffet, alongside these other tortilla sandwiches like ham and cheese pinwheels or tuna salad roll ups.
For this recipe, the flavor combination of creamy cottage cheese, sweet strawberries, peppery basil and soft lettuce leaves creates a fresh and balanced wrap that feels light yet satisfying. A perfect option to enjoy at any time of the day. The good thing is that you can make it in advance and store it for later.
Which ingredients to use

- Flour tortillas: Use large flour tortillas as they are easier to roll than smaller ones. For this recipe, I used whole wheat wraps for extra fiber.
- Cottage cheese: This high-protein low-fat cheese adds a creamy texture and mild tanginess to the wrap. If you don’t have cottage cheese on hand, you can substitute with cream cheese or soft goat cheese for a similar richness, but with a different flavor profile.
- Strawberries: Use fresh and ripe strawberries that are juicy, sweet and just delicious. Don’t use frozen strawberries as they will make these roll ups soggy.
- Lettuce: Use any lettuce leaves you like or have on hand. For this recipe, I combined both red leaf and green leaf lettuce for extra color and crunch.
- Basil: A few fresh basil leaves add a peppery, aromatic note that pairs very well with the sweetness of strawberries.
- Balsamic glaze (optional): Balsamic glaze or balsamic reduction complements the strawberries and cottage cheese perfectly. Just a drizzle adds a tangy sweet flavor. Use either store-bought or homemade balsamic glaze.
- Seasoning: These strawberry cottage cheese wraps don’t really need any additional seasoning as all the flavor comes from the ingredients themselves. Since cottage cheese is mildly salty, no additional salt is needed. However, if you like, you can always add a pinch of salt and some freshly ground black pepper.
How to make strawberry cottage cheese roll ups
- Prep the strawberries: Wash the strawberries under cold running water. Remove the green stems and thinly slice the strawberries. If they are sliced too thick the wrap becomes too bulky and difficult to roll.
- Prepare the leafy greens: Rinse the lettuce and basil leaves, then pat them dry with a paper towel. Tear into smaller pieces if needed.
- Spread the cottage cheese: Lay out the tortilla on a flat surface and spread a layer of cottage cheese evenly over the whole tortilla. Try to avoid going all the way to the edges, otherwise the cheese will ooze out when rolling.
- Assemble the tortilla: Place a few lettuce and basil leaves over one part of the tortilla. Then layer the sliced strawberries on top of the greens. Drizzle with balsamic glaze.

- Roll the tortilla: Carefully roll the tortilla tight, but do it gently, starting with the side where the lettuce and strawberries are. Repeat this for all the tortillas.
- Serve or store: Cut in half and serve immediately or wrap in plastic foil and refrigerate for later.
How to store
Wrap the strawberry cottage cheese roll ups tightly in plastic wrap before refrigerating to keep them fresh for up to 24 hours.
For the best taste and texture, eat them the same day they are prepared. Make them in the morning and enjoy as a fresh snack or light meal later in the day.
