Having a brunch doesn’t only have to be for special celebrations like Easter brunch or Mother’s Day brunch, any weekend is perfect to enjoy a delicious and relaxing brunch with family or friends.
Fresh strawberries always look beautiful and inviting on a brunch table when they are in season as they combine wonderfully with other dishes to make your spread complete.
Try combining them with other seasonal favorites like Spanish tomato bread, curried egg sandwiches, smoked salmon tartare and various spreads such as tuna salad, surimi crab salad or guacamole.
When are fresh strawberries in season
In general, fresh strawberries are at their best from late spring to early summer. So strawberry season will depend on where you live. During the these months you’ll find the sweetest and juiciest strawberries at local markets, grocery stores and even your own garden, if you grow them.
Of course, you can often find strawberries in supermarkets all year round, but nothing beats the flavor of fresh, seasonal strawberries picked at their peak.
How to keep strawberries fresh longer
When fresh strawberries are in season and you buy them from the farmer’s market or grocery store, you have probably noticed that they don’t keep for very long before going soft or mouldy. Here are some simple tips to keep strawberries fresh for as long as possible:
- Store them in the fridge, unwashed and preferably uncovered, so they stay dry and fresh.
- Don’t rinse strawberries until you are ready to use or eat them
- Leave the stems on while storing to help them last longer.
- Check the packet regularly and remove any mouldy or mushy berries straight away, as they will cause the others to spoil faster.
- For extra freshness, line the container with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture.

How to clean strawberries
Strawberries are delicate fruits and can easily bruise, so it’s important to clean them properly without damaging them. Here are some simple tips for cleaning strawberries. At least, this is how I do it:
- Rinse them just before eating or using.
- Place them in a colander and rinse the strawberries under cool running water.
- It’s important to leave the stems on while rinsing, as this prevents water from getting inside the berry and making them soggy and bland.
- Pat them gently dry with a paper towel.
- Only now remove the stems and cut as desired.
Note: There are lots of tips out there on how to properly clean strawberries; some people rinse them in salt water, others use baking soda or vinegar. While these methods might work, I’m not totally sure how effective they are so I stick to the simple way I described here. It’s easy, gentle and works well for me.
